If you’re looking for a new home, trying to sell your current residence or have found the abode of your dreams, you may think sealing the deal is the most stressful part of the ordeal. However, you may soon find that moving is even worse. Here are a few tips to make the moving process easier, and stress less during this exciting transition.
If you’ve been living in one place for any period of time, you can easily become overwhelmed by the amount of stuff you’ve accumulated during your stay there. The good news about moving is that it’s a great opportunity to declutter your life. Throw out, sell or donate anything you don’t need. Don’t be afraid to let go of things that don’t serve you. If you’re waffling on whether to keep or toss something, think of it this way: if you don’t use it now, you won’t use it after you move.
You should make sure you’ll have help for your move well in advance of moving day. Ask friends and family to block out their schedules if they’re available, or set up a reservation with professional movers. You should also make sure, before you move, that you can rent a moving truck or borrow a friend’s truck to save money.
Don’t pack all your stuff at once. Waiting until the days before your move to pack will only stress you out. Instead, take stock of the things you won’t need or use for at least a month, like out-of-season clothes, books, trinkets, photos, decorations and rarely-used kitchenware. You should also make sure to not over-pack boxes. It’s much better to make extra trips than hurt yourself or have the bottom of a box full of your grandmother’s china fail.
Wear closed-toed shoes with good grips and breathable, comfortable fabrics. Also be aware of the weather on the day of your move. No one wants to haul furniture inside while it’s raining, obviously, but you should also be aware of the sun. Wear sunscreen, as you’re going to be outside for long periods of time, and make sure you have plenty of water to keep you cool and hydrated in the Miami heat.
Moving can take a lot out of you – but you’re going to thank yourself for unpacking sooner rather than later. Start with furniture so you can rest, but get a head-start unpacking that same day. The sooner you put your things away, the sooner you’ll feel comfortable in your new home.
